COPD is managed over years, so the quality of each follow-up visit adds up. A few minutes of preparation lets the doctor see the whole picture rather than just how you feel today.

Bring the physical items

  • Every inhaler, spacer and nebuliser medicine you use — not just the names. Technique can be checked on the actual device.
  • All current medicines, including tablets for blood pressure, diabetes or the heart.
  • Previous prescriptions and discharge papers from any hospital stay.
  • Chest X-rays, CT scans and breathing-test (spirometry) reports, ideally the actual films or digital copies.

Bring a short written summary

  • How breathlessness has changed: which tasks are harder now than six months ago?
  • Flare-ups: how many in the past year, and any hospital visits, antibiotic or steroid courses.
  • Cough and phlegm: colour, amount and any blood.
  • Sleep problems, morning symptoms and how often you use the reliever inhaler.
  • Smoking status, and exposure to smoke, dust or cooking fuel at home or work.

Questions worth asking

  • Am I using each inhaler correctly, and are all of them still needed?
  • What should I do at home when symptoms worsen, and when should I come in?
  • Are vaccinations or pulmonary rehabilitation appropriate for me?
  • What can I do about smoking, weight, nutrition and activity?

Do not stop or change prescribed medicines on the basis of an article. Bring your questions to the consultation so changes are made safely.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a COPD review happen?

It depends on severity, recent flare-ups and treatment changes, so the interval is decided by your doctor. Many people with stable COPD are reviewed regularly, and sooner if symptoms worsen.

Can COPD be cured?

COPD is a long-term condition and damage to the airways is not reversible, but the right treatment, inhaler technique, stopping smoking and rehabilitation can reduce symptoms and flare-ups.
